EBSN in EPALE’s Prison Education Week

Offenders in prisons are a small but significant part of the target group of basic skills policies. Europe’s prison population is around 640,000 and it’s estimated that only 3-5{45dd1fd917f9c5256ddd62f2bb60264c9fd035a788f5039a41e25e9de2257d18} are at a level of skills that would allow them to progress into further life long learning. Low education levels affect prisoners’ employment prospects and their reinsertion in society. Basic skills training is definitely a must – but that training needs to be relevant, motivating, and efficient and it is not always so.

During EPALE’s Prison Education Week, which will start on Monday January 25th, the EBSN is organizing an online discussion on these issues. The discussion will start on Tuesday 26th and go on for three days. It will be led by Dr Joseph Giordmania, from the University of Malta, and will mainly be based on a report from Vox, Norway, entitled “Learning Basic Skills while Serving Time”.

You will be able to join the discussion at any time during the three days, log in and off as it suits your obligations, and read and comment the contributions from other participants. You can be a passive participant and just read the entries, but we hope you will log into Epale (register beforehand if you haven’t done so yet!) and be an active participant.

We are very much looking forward to meeting you online to discuss these important issues!
